<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Nuturing a Greener Future: The Sustainability of Wood Flooring - Save this blog post for later!</image:title>
<image:caption>With growing concerns over the wellbeing of the environment amidst the rise of climate change, looking into the background of all materials in order to make an eco-friendly decision can be helpful. In this blog post, we are diving into arguably the most sustainable option: traditional sand & finish hardwood. Going forward, hardwood will refer to site-finished solid hardwood, where each plank is a solid piece of wood. The planks themselves have had minimal to no manipulation from the wood mill, where the wood planks themselves are fresh from the milling and drying process with nothing else going on with the plank. Other hardwood options include engineered wood, which can be prefinished in a factory or site finished. Usually, engineered wood floors are not solid planks of wood, which means there are more factors that go into the sustainability of this specific type of wood flooring. Engineered wood floors deserve its own article exploring the different sustainability factors and impacts flooring shoppers should be aware of. Regardless of what type of wood floor we are looking at, since each type of wood floor is made with one of the most renewable resources available on the planet, wood floors will be highly sustainable and will more than likely always be more sustainable than other flooring options, like wool carpet and stone floors. Trees can replace another tree that has been farmed for various uses like paper, fuel, and standard wood products, and if done correctly, sections of forests that are dedicated to a mill will be better for the environment—no deforestation on a massive scale, while also creating an actual benefit for the ecosystems dwelling in farming forests. Similar things can be said with other flooring options, like again, wool carpet specifically, but typically, wood floors provide more benefit in the long run for the homeowner and for the planet itself. Now, that may not always be the case, but in a majority of instances, wood will be the best option for the environment. Why is that?</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63cc45c691dbaf56e9aff6cb/a10f9df2-b0eb-475a-a265-444c8edd268e/ANF_Old-Growth_Forest_%281%29.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Nuturing a Greener Future: The Sustainability of Wood Flooring - Furthermore, forests are more likely to face degradation if enough trees—and specifically older trees—over time, which is the loss or shrinking of an area’s ecosystem. With less old growth, the ecosystem is put at greater risk—and that heavily affects us. For starters, communities around the globe rely on food and medicines that come from a natural forest. If these sources of food starts to deteriorate in quality, those communities face an increased risk of malnutrition. The degradation problem persists leads to these communities facing a food and health crisis, which can lead to entire communities being wiped out, either directly caused by the lack of nutrition and medical care or by the community itself packing up and immigrating elsewhere. That’s a problem that can be mitigated, which means that where forest degradation is currently affecting communities, their suffering directly related to this problem is something that should not be happening and can be stopped.</image:title>
<image:caption>Old growth also protects our own communities from flooding. Typically, old growth trees are going to be massive and provide a strong canopy that slows down rainfall, thus allowing the soil to absorb water at a slower, steady rate instead of becoming oversaturated and therefore unable to absorb any more water. When water does absorb into the soil, the roots themselves can absorb the water, which again helps the soil from oversaturing. The roots also create clear channels for water to run through, meaning water can go deeper into the earth faster. Roots also stabilize the soil, and the stabilization prevents erosion and runoff, meaning nearby rivers can support a proper water flow over time; if too much soil runs off, the river’s depth can become more shallow, and where the sediment lands can create blockages and other disruptions to the river’s course. Trees can also naturally move water from the ground into the air through a process known as evapotranspiration. Evapotranspiration decreases the amount of water within the soil, so by the time the next rain storm comes along, the soil will be ready to reabsorb more water instead of letting standing, potentially flowing, water form from oversaturation. With all of these flood protections, the ecosystem itself has strong defenses from a natural disaster, and that trickles down to our own human-made communities. The forest therefore protects us from flooding, and depending on the natural river flow of the area, allows us to have access to clean, consistent water.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Carpet Dyeing Methods and What They Mean to You - Save me for later!</image:title>
<image:caption>The carpet dyeing process. At first thought, dyeing carpet seems like a simple process, where either you use yarn fibers that are already dyed to make the carpet itself or it is dyed after woven together. Though carpet dyes can be simplified down to either is is pre- or -post dyed, there is, of course with much other concepts in life, more nuance to dyeing than that, and the method used can heavily influence how well the carpet will perform or look after everything is said and done. That’s also not even taking into account how different fibers react to dye and therefore how well it holds onto it without doing anything else to the fibers. There is an art to dyeing a carpet, and we want to take the time to sit back and look at what different dyeing methods do to different carpet types.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Carpet Dyeing Methods and What They Mean to You - The Chopped Carrot Analogy</image:title>
<image:caption>A common analogy used in the carpet industry to compare solution dyed carpet to other dye methods is to look at a carrot compared to a radish. Refer to the image for the carrot and scroll down to the next dye method for the image of a radish. In terms of color, the orange hues of a carrot can be seen all the way through the carrot, no matter how it is cut. The carrot is the same color throughout, and solution dyed fibers are the same way; if you cut into a the fiber to see the central piece, the dye goes all the way through and will be consistent. Radishes, on the other hand, are a red hue on the exterior, but when you cut into a radish, the color fades and turns white. The center of a radish is not the same color as the exterior, which is a strong analogy to other dye methods. View below to see the sketch of a radish for comparison.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Carpet Dyeing Methods and What They Mean to You - The Chopped Radish</image:title>
<image:caption>Most, if not all, dye methods are more akin to the color of a radish, where if you are able to see the internal cross-section cut of a fiber, the center will normally be the original color of the fiber, white is normally a white color, regardless if it is a natural or synthetic fiber. Solution dyed fibers are unique in this regard, which is what makes the appeal for this dye method that much higher than other options. There are a couple of benefits to having the dye penetrate all the way through the fiber strand. For starters, the carpet itself will be resistant to fading because the color goes throughout the entire fiber; there is the same color providing support within the core of the fiber, thus allowing the original hue to shine through even after the outer layer of the fiber is worn. The color consistency over its life is rather impressive. Furthermore, because the dye has been chemically mixed with the synthetic material and cannot be separated again, other chemicals like bleach will have a harder time removing the color from the carpet without causing damage to the fiber itself. In this situation, solution dyed carpet is a lot like our hair, where the pigment of individual hair strands hold color; once bleached, given enough bleach to work with and time, pigment can be removed from the hair, but the strand is left damaged. Solution dyed carpets can behave the same way, where some manufacturer’s like Dreamweaver claim diluted bleach can be used to remove stains. The stain can be removed this way, but the fibers are put at a higher risk of being damaged.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Solution dyed fibers are also less likely to be vibrant in color, though that does not make it impossible. Between the mixing and multiple heating processes the fibers go through, the color usually turns out darker with muted tones. The best way to explain the idea is through cake. When someone is making a chocolate cake, the baker usually mixes cocoa powder into the mix, which results in the entire cake turning into a dark chocolate-brown color. The baker then uses the same cocoa to make a chocolate frosting, which ends up being a more vibrant brown color. By being mixed with other contents, then undergoing a hot chemical reaction, the cake itself turns to a darker color, whereas the frosting stays true to the original dye’s color. The same concept works with solution dyed carpet, where such carpets are usually less vibrant and tend to stay in the same white, grey, black, and brown color palettes. However, solution dyed colors (as in, the actual dye pellets) have come a long way, and we are starting to see more and more color options available. Not as much vibrancy is lost when mixed with the fiber. For instance, let’s take a look at Anderson Tuftex’s Color Theory collection, which showcases various styles and dozens upon dozens of color options for each style; Crochet, pictured, is a part of this collection. With various shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple filling the catalogue, manufacturers such as Anderson Tuftex have shown it is possible to solution dye (In this case, nylons. Hooray! More on that in a moment.) more vibrant hues.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A skein dyed carpet offers more creative freedom during the manufacturing process, as there is a larger color option to select from and the ability to tuft unique patterns with the yarns. Compared to post-dyeing printing methods, to which we will discuss later in the article, artists can be more precise and intentional with where a certain color appears in a pattern. The artistic possibilities open up with skeined dyed options, which leads to stunning carpets and rugs that could not otherwise be replicated. The color also tends to be more rich and vibrant, offering greater depth and visual interest. Skein dyed carpets also tend to have a stronger color consistency across the carpet roll itself, with streaks and other deformities becoming an extremely rare occurrence. Compared to other coloring methods, skein dyeing is known to create a soft texture because the baths remove debris or other textures and the dye method itself is gentle, thus preserving the natural soft qualities of fibers like wool and cotton. Furthermore, due to the care and attention that has to take place during skein dyeing, these carpets tend to have a higher quality in terms of gentleness on the skin and durability. Wool, for instance, is already a fairly durable fiber type, so by trying to preserve the integrity of the fibers, the characteristics unique to the fiber-type will be preserved and ultimately highlighted compared to other wools that have undergone under treatments. That’s not to say treated wool will outperform pure skein dyed wool, but the dye method does preserve certain elements without having to make up for the damage or other alterations done through other manufacturing treatments; sometimes certain processes enhance specific characteristics, as seen through Masland’s Capri in the previous section.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The carpet in the room pictures uses a space dyed carpet. Here, we can see the transition between colors, as the colors shift between pink and purples to blues and yellows, with the occasional green in the mix. With a constant shift of hues, the carpet visually has more depth and interest going on, despite the carpet pile itself being consistent. In this particular space, the carpet is meant to be the highlight of the room, adding a touch of creativity and curiosity to the space with ease. In other cases, a space dyed carpet like the one pictured can provide a wonderful color palette for the space, allowing homeowners to emphasis a single color within the carpet and use other colors as accent colors within the room or throughout the house as a way to tie everything together. A rather fun and inspiring way to add color, indeed! Click on the image to go to the old listing on Kane’s website</image:caption>

<image:caption>Despite what initial impressions, a continuously dyed carpet does not have to be a solid color; in fact, it’s rather the contrary. The image highlights one of Fabrica’s few continuously dyed carpet, and if you look carefully, you can actually see the pattern repeat of the carpet. (For those struggling to see it, the easiest spot to compare is the upper left portion of the table to the upper right portion, where upper is by the brown leather chair. The pattern repeats every 36” x 38”, for reference.) The pattern repeat tells us that this is likely a machine spraying on the pattern, rather than the carpet going through a dye bath—though that may be possible if the carpet is cationic dyed, but this isn’t likely because EnVision™ BCF Nylon (the fiber type the carpet is made out of) is not a known cationic dyeable nylon. With that said, I wouldn’t put it past Fabrica to use cationic methods in this type of situation, especially since they are known for “advanced tufting TECHniques” and their playful takes with color experimentation. Regardless of whether the carpet is dyed using electric methods, as discussed later in the article, the continuous dyeing process becomes a little bit easier to imagine, where the spray nozzle(s) move within the repeatable pattern to add the darker colored pattern as instructed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shaw’s Solution Q® Nylon is a solution dyed carpet using cationic and anionic dyes and fibers. A notable quality stated by Shaw reads as follows: “The fiber has no dye sites available for acid-based stains (i.e. coffee) to attach to the chemical structure of the fiber, which gives the fiber an ability to prevent acid-based stains from staying put, ensuring only water is needed for stain removal.” -Shaw Contract, emphasis added | More information, follow this link. An electrically charged dye method does allow for unique stain resistance, as shared with Shaw specifically. Due to the acid-defense nature, we therefore see cationic dyed carpets more frequently in commercial-esque formats, like carpet tiles. There is not a strong market for a residential version of cationic dyed carpets. Now that one of the only residential manufacturers gone for cationic carpet, Phenix, has closed their carpet lines, there is not much left. There is not a strong demand for this type of carpet, likely in part due to education on the mater, marketing, and the actual cost of the carpet.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When it comes to flooring, the options can sometimes feel like they keep coming along no matter where you look. There’s LVP, which alone has dozens of ways to mix and match different core materials and installation methods. Hardwood can come in different flavors as well, from engineered to prefinished engineered to standard hardwood and even prefinished standard hardwood—and that’s without even diving into the hundreds of wood species to choose from and the endless stain color combinations. Laminate and linoleum. Sheet vinyl. Tile and stone. We could go on and on about the different flooring options available for homeowners to select from, but today, we want to focus on one: carpet. Much like other options, carpet has various options to mix and match various characteristics. Perhaps a polyester that is solution dyed will fit your needs. Maybe you want to try out a wool and nylon blend. Cotton also feels really nice to step on. To keep things simple, we are going to look at three of the most common fiber types: polyester, nylon, and wool. In the future, we will dive into other common fiber types, like Triexta (SmartStrand), polypropylene (olefin), and cotton, but these can be viewed as branches off of the other three categories or are more brand-specific at the moment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Out of our three carpet types, polyester (or also known as PET) is, on average, the most budget-friendly option. Polyester is a synthetic material, and for a majority of the PETs on the market, they are made with recycled materials. For that reason, carpet can actually be more eco-friendly than other synthetic flooring options on the market. Some carpet manufacturers pull waste from oceans and beaches to create their carpet, which results in a healthier environment for us, other animals, and the globe itself. Though this does not account for the actual manufacturing process, the fact that most polyesters are giving life to plastics in other ways instead of letting it deteriorate and cause harm elsewhere is a huge step in eco-consciousness. Furthermore, because of the recycled and synthetic nature of polyester, prices per square yard are usually around $8-$30, with some options dropping much lower or higher than the given range. Differences within this price point often comes from the ounce weight, dye method, and other unique construction characteristics for each carpet, with some having features that make polyester more durable and soft than others. Speaking of softness, polyester fabrics tend to have a softer feel because durability is not the priority. There are nylons, for instance, that do have an ultra-soft and fluffy underfoot, but polyesters are more likely to have that characteristic across the board, regardless of the carpet. Of course, that is not always the case, but that can be a fairly common benefit to polyester carpets.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Finally, we come to wool—the most luxurious and usually the higher priced option out of the three. If you have the budget for wool, the price is well-worth the upgrade for so many reasons. Wool is arguably the gold standard of carpet, and synthetic options have been trying to emulate the qualities of wool for decades; yet, nothing has quite come close to wool. For starters, wool is a natural and easily renewable fiber. Out of the three, wool is by far the most eco-friendly option for the earth and for you. No fear over microplastics absorbing into your skin. No fear over how large of an effect does wool have on the environment. No fear over what will happen to wool after it has lived its life and needs disposed. Furthermore, wool has a high moisture absorption rate and thermal regulation. The fiber has the natural ability to absorb moisture, both in the air and elsewhere, because the fiber is hydrophilic (water-loving). Wool actually has the ability to hold up to 35% of its own weight in moisture before becoming wet, meaning wool can naturally maintain an equilibrium of humidity within a home without putting other absorbent materials, like wood, at risk; if humidity rises, the wool will absorb the excess, and if humidity drops, the wool can release what it has absorbed. The same concept works with heat, which is why wool blankets work rather well in the winter and in the summer. For those with humidity fluctuations and drastic temperature changes throughout the seasons, wool can be a massive solution to the overarching problem without having to invest in a humidifier, dehumidifier, or other HVAC systems. Heafty cost upfront can actually lower your power and gas bill over time, thanks to wool.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Carpet. You either love it or hate it. At least that’s based on our experience helping homeowners find what the right flooring material could be for their lifestyle. For some, the cost of carpet just doesn’t seem like a valuable investment and can often feel like something that some homeowners need to replace more often than others. And I know what you may be thinking, some instances homeowners install the most budget-friendly option they felt comfortable with without taking into account the quality of the carpet. While quality of the carpet can absolutely play a role in the life of a carpet and should be something everyone takes into account when shopping for flooring, sometimes even the highest quality of carpet will wear down really quickly. In some instances, it’s not you or the carpet’s fault at all—rather, it’s just unfortunate placement of the carpet. For this discussion, we are going to c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y ignore some of the most common directing points that people often find themselves in when picking out the right carpet. That’s right, we are going to completely ignore the fiber type, dye process, and other manufacturing details. No polyester versus nylon discussions here. No “Solution Dyed is the way to go!” arguments allowed. No environmental pivoting points. Instead, we are going to look purely at the ounce weight, density, and pile height.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Click-Together v. Glue-Down v. Loose Lay LVP Edition - Click-together products are exactly what they sound like: planks that, well, click together and lock into place. There are multiple types of clicking methods, like angle/angle and drop/lock. We won’t be going into the differences of them here, but you can check out the definitions of each of them in our hard surface flooring glossary here. Essentially, the concept remains the same between the different locking mechanisms, where there are different keys, if you will, between each board that connects with a certain keyhole slot on another board. Each board has the key one on side and the keyhole slot on the other, and when interlocked together, they create a floating floor. In other words, a click-together floor acts like a giant puzzle and is floating over a subfloor.</image:title>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Click-Together v. Glue-Down v. Loose Lay LVP Edition - Unlike rigid core products, glue-down must adhere to the subfloor. If the product is not glued-down, it can shift around and basically have a mind of its own. The edges do not have a mechanism to keep them together, so glue is used to keep them in place.</image:title>

<image:title>Bonsai Timber Times - Learning the Art of Bonsai: Click-Together v. Glue-Down v. Loose Lay LVP Edition - Loose lay is taking the best of glue-down and the best of rigid core, then putting them together into one product. We aren’t even kidding. Loose lay does not have a locking mechanism but can be laid right up against one another without gluing the entire floor down. (You do have to glue the very edges of where the floor will go, so some glue is required. No where near the required amount, though.) However, you can glue down the product. The reason you can do either comes down to the backing, where loose lay typically has a textured pattern that gives the plank traction to prevent them from moving while also providing groves for glue to better adhere to.</image:title>
