How to Order Your Rug
Colors can play a major role in the feel for a space. For instance, green is generally coordinated with ideas surrounding nature and growth, which for a lot of people can invoke feelings of serenity and peace. Red, on the other hand, is more connected to stronger emotions like excitement or danger, but depending on the hue—as it gets softer and closer to pink—the emotions red can invoke can become more mild and gentle. There is a lot that can go into picking the right color for a space, and soon, we will have a blog post diving deep into color theory and psychology. To keep things simple, though, find colors that speak to you and to the vision you are trying to curate. You don’t have to be specific with your color choices yet, though sometimes it can help. Sometimes a simple, “I am drawn to blue for this space” can be enough to work with.
Step One: Decide Your Color Palette
Before looking at any designs, we find it helpful to know what type of fiber and plushiness you would like for the space. Remember, plush does not necessarily equal better or higher quality in terms of product, but the more plush a carpet or rug is, the cozier and warmer a room will feel. Furthermore, picking out the fiber type can also be a helpful step before looking into rugs, as the three major types (Polyester, Nylon, and Wool) each have different benefits. Polyester can be more budget-friendly, where Nylon can cost a little more but have better stain resistance. Wool is highly durable and is allergen-friendly, but wool-blend fibers can potentially cost more and may be harder to install, if you are looking to install wool. Regardless of what you pick, it is helpful to know what each fiber type can do for you and what strengths it may have against the other fiber types.
Step Two: Think About Fibers and Feel
Now for the fun part! We recommend either coming to our showroom to take a look at what samples we have for different designs or go to Masland or Fabrica’s websites (Buttons on the right for easy referral!) Our showroom attendants can help you find samples that match your color and fiber criteria you have already established, and our vendor’s websites also have filters to allow you to find rugs with your likings. At this point, looking at all of the samples is exciting but can become overwhelming rather quickly. We recommend only looking at a few boards at a time and weeding out which ones you are less inclined to have in your space. Those don’t have to be put away just yet, as you may find later that design you originally didn’t like may actually be better suited to your needs and tastes more than you originally thought. Another stack or list of what those samples are can be handy.
Depending on the situation, you may find it helpful to take the sample home to the space you are trying to get a rug for. Lighting makes a world of difference, and so does the floor, furniture, and other fixtures in the room, which can help you narrow down which options are right for you. Samples can be ordered at no cost to you from Masland and Fabrica, so if you want a sample you can keep and not have to worry about returning it to the showroom, that can be a great option.
A little bit of advice from our showroom experts: Go with your gut! A majority of the time, our clients will end up going with their first pick, even after looking at dozens upon dozens of other samples. Sometimes you just know what you like and what you don’t at first glance. If what you see is the one, then that’s okay!

Step Three: Find Your Design
P.S. And if there are rugs that aren’t quite to your liking, we can help you design your own custom rug, tailored exactly to your liking. Fabrica has an online interface with an endless array of rug options for you to choose from, with over 220 colored fibers available (See image above for reference) . They have the capabilities to create a rug of your design, so if you are feeling creative or wishing a rug could come in a different color, you could create something of your own imagination!
Go to the button below and select which custom rug patterns they have available. You can either drag colors from their color palette to the area of the rug you want to change colors or click on the color-coordinating alphabetized box above the palette to see what colors are corresponded with what letter to change those colors. Once you have completed your design, download the rug as a .pdf file by clicking on the PDF button towards the top left corner. Print the design or email the file to info@bonsaiflooring.com so we can get more information, such as pricing, over to you as soon as possible.
By this point, you are almost ready to order your rug, but we need a few more details. What size of rug? What would you like the edging to be: synthetic, cotton, hand surged, micro, or machine surged? Is there a specific backing you would like? Or other accessories, like a slip mat to go under the rug? These are more nitty-gritty questions that ultimately come down to personal preference. For information about each of the backing and edge options, reach out to us! We can provide more information about the differing options.
Once we have the size, edging, and backing sorted out, we are then able to send you a finalized quote of the rug and get it ordered once you approve the design! We will notify you once the rug arrives and provide you with additional care information for your rug specifically with vacuum settings and suggestions, cleaning schedule, maintenance, and more.
